Tired of jewelry looking dull and lifeless after only a few uses? Wish your favorite pieces would always shine as brightly as the day you got them? Here are our best tips for taking care of your jewelry, so that they last longer without losing its luster.

1. Keep jewelry away from moisture and chemicals

All types of makeup, perfume, and cleaning agents are bad for jewelry. Natural pearls and gemstones such as lava stones are porous by nature. Exposure to hair dye or coloring from other beauty and skincare products may cause jewelry to become discolored. Take them off before taking showers or baths, swimming, or any vigorous sweaty exercise.

2. Jewelry should be the last thing on and the first thing off

Finish applying makeup and perfume before putting on your jewelry. Take them off before removing makeup to avoid any exposure to liquid.

3. Make sure jewelry is dry before storing

Give pieces a gentle wipe with a piece of soft 100% cotton or microfiber cloth after use. An old, soft, clean t-shirt or an eyeglass cleaning cloth are some good options.

4. Store each piece in a separate compartment, box, or linen bag

Keeping many pieces of jewelry together can be damaging: chains can get tangled; beads can get scratched or chipped; different types of metals sitting next to each other can tarnish more quickly.

5. Store jewelry in a cool, dark, dry place to keep them shining like new

Long exposure to harsh sunlight or heat can dull the shine and beauty of your jewelry. Avoid areas of your home that are exposed to direct sunlight or prone to heating up during the day.

6. Be gentle with elastic bands and spring mechanisms

Overstretching can damage elastic material and cause it to partially lose its elasticity. Excessive force may crack or break elastic bands, latches, and clasps.

7. Take jewelry off before sleeping

Necklaces and pendants pose an accidental choking hazard, and accidental force may damage any type of jewelry while you sleep.
